During the black power movement White Americans responded by giving African Americans the power and the courage to speak out. Black Panther member Eldridge Cleaver, a best selling author and black liberationist, wrote his autobiography Soul on Ice in 1968. His writings were very influential during this movement. Millions and millions of both colored and white Americans supported this movement. African Americans expressed their culture and ethnicity by showing off their traditional African clothing and created new unique hairstyles to show pride in their ethnicity.
Not only did people write their own novels about their experiences living in a segregated world, but they also held protests that were held at major sporting events, such as the Olympics, as well as public places. Many sport idols like Muhammad Ali, a black professional boxer, John Carlos, a colored track and field star, and Tommie Smith, an African american football player, all “raised their fist in a black power salute” in the victory games held in Mexico City.
